Happy Friday fellow flora appreciators,
As some of you may have noticed, there is a new tab in the menu as of yesterday. I am happy to announce the release of Episode Zero of the Plants Parlance Podcast. I wanted to do a trial run for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I wanted to talk briefly about the beginnings of PTBO Flora, future projects, and what the podcast will cover going forward. Secondly, and like mention in the podcast, I have never done a podcast so it's all new so I wanted to try out the microphone and software. I hope you have a listen, and if you like it please share freely!
The first episode will be with Tom from Outside The Hops and we'll be talking in the week following the Canada Day long weekend. One of your perks as a member is you are able to submit questions for my interviewees. And I look forward to seeing what you want to know from him.
Anyway, I am Toronto-bound, leaving in about an hour, for the weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family. I plan on going to the Evergreen Brickworks Farmers' Market, I used to go every Saturday when I lived in Toronto and there are a lot of great vendors (although it can be a bit on the pricey side sometimes). And I also hope to make time to go to Allan Gardens. I've actually never been! When I lived in Toronto it was one of those things that I could go to anytime...and so I never ended up going (same story with the CN Tower among others).
What are your plans for the weekend?
Dear Fellow Flora Appreciators,
The Google Forum I had been tested is going to be removed - gasp! As I mentioned in an earlier post, we're trying new things on these pages and some of those things may not work. As members seem more inclined to join in on discussions in a Facebook forum, then that is going to be the home of our forum. You will notice the members forum tab disappearing shortly, so I just wanted to explain why. If any of you have not yet received an invite to our closed group please let me know.
In other news...
Look for interview information coming up in the coming days! You will have a couple weeks to check out my interviewee's website and submit any questions you may have about their work and interests.
I am also working on a short promo video this weekend. Yesterday I went out to University Heights Park, my neighborhood park, to film some wildflowers and now it's a matter of editing, adding narration, and just generally putting it all together.
Dear fellow flora appreciators,
Thank you for your initial feedback over this past week! We were happy to receive a number of emails full of supportive words and great suggestions. As you all know, the membership pages are new to us, but we are committed to building something great.
We've been working on layout and functionality of the PTBO Flora website this weekend, something we are constantly tweaking. The unseasonably cool weather, and rain or grey skies threatening rain, kept us indoors - which was good for our productivity.
We hope that you had a great weekend!
Dear fellow flora appreciators,
PTBO Flora was born as a passion project. We were founded in the summer of 2015 by Rachel Kuzmich as a resource meant to provide information about local wildflowers found in and around Peterborough. This original intention is reflected in our original name PTBO Flora Compendium.
The Compendium remains a cornerstone of our current website, but we have expanded and our current name PTBO Flora reflects the broader range of services, products, and content we have begun to offer. Realizing the widespread interest in getting to know local flora and with the growing popularity of the PTBO Flora website, Rachel dreamt of bringing together local people with shared interest, and eventually of creating a global online community of fellow flora appreciators. A mighty task for any individual (and her wallet) to attempt!
Being able to provide the quality and quantity of content that we want requires a lot of time and hard work, both of which we are committed to. But it also requires financial support. Something that, up until this point, we have not sought out but are increasingly in need of. We have long since outgrown our humble roots as Rachel's passion project!
In an effort to get the money ball rolling and generate funds that can be cycled back in our work we have started to sell some of Rachel's photography. This is something that we have been asked for quite a bit, especially on Instagram, and we are happy to offer an initial curated selection of framed prints.
We have also made the decision to develop a new membership program, both monthly and yearly options are available. Your contribution helps finance our website, projects and other operational costs. As a way to give thanks to those individuals who have become members, we are committed to delivering exclusive content and other perks to you. The membership pages are a work in progress. They will continue to grow. Some ideas may fail while other succeed, some may be more popular while others less so. As always, we strive to meet the wants and needs of our community and of you: our members.
Please let us know what you like, what you don't like, and what you would like us to try.
